Good little whistle for grandsons hiking trip

A whistle is a whistle is a whistle, I guess. Plus points on this one:-it's loud-it comes with a lanyard to sling round your neck or attach to a rucksack strap-it seems well constructed/designed and unlikely to block or freeze upMinus points:-the lanyard is a pain if you don't want it. If you don't want it, why pay for it?-the whistle is quite pricey [I find Lifesystems' stuff tends to be].So- if you need the lanyard and want a basic no-nonsense whistle, you won't go far wrong with this one.

This is good value for money. It does exactly what it does.

Seems to be practically indestructible, is brightly coloured so you can find it easily in all but the darkest light levels and it's as loud as a decent whistle should be.One of those survival-ish items that you really should take with you when camping/hiking/backpacking or anything else outdoors related, yet is so lightweight and inconspicuous that you wouldn't notice it until you actually need it.There's good reasons why it's DofE recommended kit, you can easily see why and you'd be a total idiot not to have one for this price.

I've had a Lifesystem whistle for years, and only wanted a replacement, as the end of the latch broke off, making it impossible to clip it onto a backpack strap with one hand.The old lanyard was stitched in, making it very robust, 5 years on my cycling bag with almost daily use it held up very well. The old whistle (shown in the product last photo on the backpack) is slimmer, has a better mouth piece (it has a wider and more pronounced lip, making it easy to bite down and hold with your teeth), and the wall thickness of the material appears thicker. It also had three finger "grooves" giving good grip with gloves on.This newer design is far less refined, a tad more bulky, appears more flimsy.The new lanyard isn't sown in, but is a attached with a key ring (not sturdy, not flimsy) instead. It adds a snagging point, but you could live with that. What makes the new lanyard hopeless, is that has a plastic "pull" toggle on the other end, so if you apply even a moderate amount of force it would pop open and you might loose the whistle.It's one of those products where the mantra "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" applies. It was practical, well thought out at a perfect price. The new one is designed to fail.Perhaps that's the reason why Lifesystems had to change the design, turnover!Won't buy again.Also: I fixed my old one by softening the plastic with a lighter, and bending the end up a little, so I can slip it on a strap again with one hand. I'll keep using that one for as long as I can!
